Veteran police officer charged with firearms offence

A police officer with Scarborough's 41 Division is facing weapons charges after a man allegedly pointed a gun at two security guards on Monday, March 1.

Police said a man attempted to enter private property on Unwin Avenue in his personal vehicle but was unable to due to a security gate.

During questioning by two security officers stationed at the gate house, the driver allegedly drew a police-issued firearm and pointed it in the direction of the security guards.

The man then left the scene.

Police said the officer charged in connection to the alleged incident, who has 35 years of service with the force, was off-duty at the time.

William Hamilton, 58, of Oshawa, has been charged with careless use of a firearm, pointing a firearm and weapons dangerous.
