Toronto Centre byelection candidates selected

The slate of candidates in the Toronto Centre Feb. 4 byelection is taking shape with the big four parties settling on their choices.

The incumbent Liberal party has named former Winnipeg mayor Glen Murray, the Conservatives have countered with businesswoman and community leader Pamela Taylor, the New Democrats have tabled high-profile nurse and activist Cathy Crowe and the Green Party has selected employment specialist Stefan Premdas.

The four will vie for the provincial seat vacated by George Smitherman, who will take a run at the city's mayoralty.

Elections Ontario is also gearing up for the election, and is now accepting applications for proxy voting.

Eligible voters who will not be able to take part in the byelection on election day or at advance polling can apply for certificates to allow other eligible voters to cast votes on their behalf.

Applications must be brought, along with proper identification, to the voters' local returning office by 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 3. Proxy voters must then bring both the certificate and proper identification to the polls when they vote.

To be eligible to vote, a person must by 18 years of age, a Canadian citizen and a resident of Toronto Centre.

Applications for proxy voting are available at www.elections.on.ca or at returning offices.

For more information on proxy voting, call 1-866-566-9766.
