Four men suffered serious injuries in four collisions in Scarborough, two near the same intersection less than 24 hours apart.
At 11:44 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 25, a 31-year-old man ran onto Ellesmere Road at Midland Avenue and was struck by an eastbound Honda. The car had a green light.Const. Hugh Smith of the traffic services unit said the pedestrian's head struck the windshield. "He's unconscious but is breathing." The pedestrian was taken to Sunnybrook hospital with massive head trauma and a fractured leg.At 6:39 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 26, a cyclist was struck by a van on Ellesmere about 100 metres west of Midland.Smith said the cyclist, a 41-year-old man, was in the eastbound curb lane when a Plymouth Voyager rear-ended him. "The cyclist was thrown into the windshield," the constable said. "Then he was thrown forward about 20 feet."The cyclist wasn't wearing a helmet. He suffered head, neck and back injuries. The 74-year-old van driver wasn't hurt. He has been charged with careless driving."The bike is mangled up pretty good," Smith said.Also at 6:39 a.m. Thursday, an 87-year-old man was hurt when the Chevrolet Cavalier he was driving struck a hydro pole on Birchmount Road south of St. Clair Avenue. The senior was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.Police are also investigating a hit-and-run that sent a 71-year-old man to hospital with life-threatening head injuries.The senior was walking in the parking lot of the Parkway Mall at 85 Ellesmere Rd. when a Ford Explorer hit him at 5:56 p.m. Wednesday. Smith said the 50-year-old female driver got out of her vehicle to speak with the victim but he was unconscious. "She returned to her vehicle and fled the scene," he alleged.
