Spin some yarn for shelter

The Redwood Shelter, a safe haven for women and their children escaping domestic abuse, has been Mary Breen's charity of choice for many years.

Her daughters have even volunteered there.

"It think it's a great organization," said the owner of Wise Daughters Craft Market in the Junction.

So, it was a no-brainer for the crafter, who decided to launch her first hats, mittens and scarves campaign in honour of the local women's shelter. She hosted a clothing swap in the spring in the name of the Redwood, which was so popular Breen decided to turn the event into a two-parter.

"I have a group of women who come in for Sit 'n' Stitch every Thursday evening. A lot of them knit far more than they can use," said Breen.

That's why she approached the Redwood Shelter's Liz Majic, who was extremely receptive to the idea of donations of handmade winter wear.

"It means a lot because it's a gift that a person took their time and effort to make. And, it's brand new," said Majic. "That's what we aim for, items that are brand new and made with care."

Hats, mitts and scarves are an added cost for women and their children who rely on the Redwood Shelter.

"We take for granted that a lot of us can go buy gloves and not think anything of it," said Majic.

Wise Daughters Craft Market vendors have agreed to pitch in too, said Breen, by donating their unsold merchandise.

"I think I'll end up with a nice collection of pretty things," she said.

The Redwood Shelter helps 200 families, including women and their children who are staying at the shelter and those who have been re-established into the community, Majic said. The Redwood organizes a holiday program each year providing women with grocery and gift cards. â?¨"This empowers women and children to give to their loved ones. It helps with the rising cost of food as well," she said.

The holiday fund includes a wish list based on the feedback from the families staying at the shelter. It provides financial support so staff can take families on field trips such as to the movies or skating.

"It's a comprehensive program," said Majic. "It's here to brighten the season and to give them something to look forward to."

Incidences of domestic violence rise dramatically during the holidays, Majic said.

Breen invites people to drop by during the Sit 'n' Stitch evenings on Thursday or to buy items at the shop to donate. Donations can be made until Dec. 15. Wise Daughters Craft Market can be found at 3079B Dundas St. W. Visit www.wisedaughters.com for details.
