The Ruby Chinese Restaurant remained closed Tuesday, Oct. 13, as its management continued work to satisfy Toronto Public Health officials who shut the premises down after a salmonella outbreak.
Inspectors closed the restaurant Oct. 7 citing failure to prevent food contamination and an insect infestation as the crucial reasons. The department has identified 22 confirmed cases of salmonella poisoning among people who ate at the restaurant on Sandhurst Circle from Sept. 12 to 20. Three people were hospitalized and one elderly man, a probable case, is dead. There is no more danger to the public.Rishma Govani, a department spokesperson, said the restaurant, which is outside Woodside Square shopping centre, had arranged for a pest control treatment Tuesday night and city staff hoped to enter for another inspection Wednesday afternoon.A man who came to the restaurant's locked front doors Tuesday refused to be interviewed.
