Hirut Hoot comedy night set for Danforth

The Danforth is getting a little funnier.

Hirut Hoot, a new comedy night at Hirut Restaurant in the heart of the Danforth's Little Ethiopia, is set to open Friday, Feb. 24.

The event features some of east Toronto's best stand-up comedians, as well as videos and comedic dance.

"Hirut is a warm and inviting place to do comedy. That in itself is an anomaly. We all look forward to entertaining an appreciative audience," said Kevin MacDonald, comedian and producer of Hirut Hoot.

Hirut restaurant hosts jazz every Saturday and open jam sessions during the week, but this is the first foray into comedy. MacDonald hopes to make this a monthly show so that more comedians from ethnically diverse backgrounds can show off their stuff and enjoy the Ethiopian atmosphere.

A comedy night came to Hirut through a business relationship host Carolyn Bennett has with Hirut owner Tibebe Woldemichael.

"Tibebe is my financial advisor at Scotiabank," she said. "When I found out he bought a restaurant, the comic in me immediately saw an opportunity to do a show. It got my mind off my pathetic mutual funds."

The Hirut Hoot takes place at 9 p.m. on Friday featuring Winston Spear, Ron Sparks, Scott McCrickard, MacDonald, Matt Shury, Rhiannon Archer, and Bennett. Hirut restaurant is located at 2050 Danforth Ave., at Woodbine Aveue.
