Members of the Etobicoke Horticultural Society were introduced to the idea of eco-friendly and sustainable home gardening during their monthly meeting earlier this month.

The meeting featured master gardener Sean James as guest speaker who shared his ideas about "edible, fermentable, medicinal landscaping".

James described eco-sustainable gardening as "an art of providing for yourself through gardening in terms of food, water and energy.

"It's about living in an environmentally sustainable way," he said.

James described a way of gardening and landscaping for your home, where most of the plants are edible, the homeowners are able to do all their composting within their garden without taking anything away from the environment or impacting it in any negative way.

A garden designed with the principles of sustainability in mind, can be all that people need to provide themselves with food, energy, water supply for the garden and even herbs and plants that have medicinal qualities.

James suggested that people can conserve energy by having solar panels in their gardens or planting trees in a way that keeps the house warm and insulated during winter and keep it cool during the hot days in summer.

The Etobicoke Horticultural Society's next monthly meeting will take place on Wednesday, March 7 at the Lambton-Kingsway School at 525, Prince Edward Drive. The meeting will begin at 8 p.m. and will feature Marilyn Cornwell on the topic "Explorations in Garden and Flower Photography".

Society members and gardening enthusiasts are also invited to participate in the upcoming Annual General Meeting of District 15 of the Horticultural Societies in the region.

The event, hosted by the local group takes place on April 21 at the Weston Golf Club.

"Pushing the Zones - Gardening with Climate Change" will feature a guest speaker, updates from the various societies, a flower show, photography competition, vendors, door prizes.

Those who are interested to volunteer at the event can register at the society's next monthly meeting. Call 416-233-9795 or visit www.gardenontario.org/site.php/etobicoke for more information.
