Etobicoke's long-term care homes are looking for college and university student volunteers to join their teams for the summer.

Kipling Acres, Wesburn Manor and Lakeshore Lodge are currently accepting applications for summer volunteers to work in any of the following areas: Adult Day Centre; arts and crafts; bingo and other recreation programs; residents' computer assistant; trip escort; dining enhancement/mealtime assistance; friendly visiting; fundraising; gift/tuck shop; hair salon escort; library; rehabilitation therapy programs; spiritual and religious care; and tea room/coffee bar.

All opportunities allow volunteers to enhance their knowledge of a wide variety of skills - from retail management, book keeping, and inventory control, to communication techniques with residents with visual, hearing and cognitive impairments, to creating and delivering recreation programs, to gaining knowledge and hands-on experience in a health-care setting.

To participate in the summer student program, volunteers must be available to dedicate at least four hours at a time, once a week - although the specific requirements vary from home to home, with many requiring volunteers to come in as often as two or three times a week.

Volunteer opportunities are also open at the seven other city-run, long-term care homes across the city.

To get involved, prospective volunteers are asked to attend one of two information sessions. The first will be held at Castleview Wychwood Towers, 351 Christie St., on Tuesday, Feb. 21 from 1 to 3 p.m. The second will be held at Bendale Acres, 2920 Lawrence Ave. E., on Saturday, Feb. 25 from 10 a.m. to noon.

Pre-registration is required via email at ltc-vol@toronto.ca by Feb. 17 for the Castleview session and by Feb. 22 for the Bendale session.

Participants are asked to bring one piece of government-issued identification (ie driver's licence, passport or photo health card) to the session, as required to process a mandatory police reference check.
