Toronto Furies take up home bench at George Bell

The George Bell Arena has itself a new tenant.

The Toronto Furies, of the Canadian Women's Hockey League, approached the arena's board once it learned the Ryerson Rams Men's Hockey Team were vacating to make their home ice the university's new athletic centre at the old Maple Leaf Gardens.

"To every female hockey player, we think this is a fantastic opportunity," said arena board member Steve Ralphs in a recent interview. "Half of their players are on the Canadian Olympic (hockey) team."

The Furies have submitted a proposal to the George Bell Arena board to officially become the Ryding Avenue arena's marquee tenant next season. The team has played a few games at George Bell with another scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 11 against Boston, at 8 p.m.

"The George Bell board is very pleased to have them," said Ralphs. "This is a great opportunity for schools to come and see them practice because school teams practice at George Bell too."
