Police withholding name of woman found dead in the Junction

Police have identified the woman found dead in a rolled up carpet in a Junction-area laneway, but are not releasing her name.

Const. Tony Vella told The Villager a day after the gruesome discovery that the woman's death is being classified as suspicious.

Police tape no longer blocks the Clendenan Avenue and Maria Street-area laneway, however, there is still a police presence in the Junction.

The woman's body was discovered shortly after noon on Wednesday, Feb. 1. The carpet was rolled up and taped and left behind a house at 583 Clendenan Ave., according to Vella. Police canvassed the neighbourhood that afternoon.

Yellow police tape cordoned off Clendenan Avenue north of Dundas Street West, Maria Street at Clendenan Avenue and a laneway that stretches between Clendenan and Quebec avenues mid-Wednesday afternoon as officers went door-to-door speaking to local residents, many of whom looked out from their front windows surveying the activity.

A woman, whose house backs onto the laneway, said it was her dog who alerted her to the rolled up carpet.

"I usually walk my dog out front along the street and back up the alley," said Susan, who only gave her first name. "She walked up to it and sniffed at it. She was acting funny."

Susan has lived in the neighbourhood for years and said most people know each other. For the most part, it's a safe neighbourhood.

On Maria Street, an elderly woman and her husband on their way back from running errands, had to ask police officers if they could cross the yellow tape to enter their Clendenan Avenue home. While she was unwilling to give her name, the woman did say that the street is typically a quiet one.

Homicide detectives have been contacted, said Vella.

Vella said Wednesday a command post had been set up and if anyone has any information, to contact 11 Division Police at 416-808-1100.
