Police are canvassing a Junction-area neighbourhood after a woman's body was found in an alleyway just after noon on Wednesday, Feb. 1.
Police are treating the woman's death as suspicious. She was discovered inside a carpet in a Maria Street and Clendenan Avenue-area laneway. It was rolled up and taped and left behind a house, Const. Tony Vella told The Villager.
Yellow police tape cordoned off Clendenan Avenue north of Dundas Street West, Maria Street at Clendenan Avenue and a laneway that stretches between Clendenan and Quebec avenues mid-Wedesday afternoon as officers went door-to-door speaking to local residents, many of whom looked out from their front windows surveying the activity.
A woman, whose house backs onto the laneway, said it was her dog who alerted her to the rolled up carpet.
"I usually walk my dog out front along the street and back up the alley," said Susan, who only gave her first name. "She walked up to it and sniffed at it. She was acting funny."
Susan has lived in the neighbourhood for years and said most people know each other. For the most part, it's a safe neighbourhood.
On Maria Street, an elderly woman and her husband on their way back from running errands, had to ask police officers if they could cross the yellow tape to enter their Clendenan Avenue home. While she was unwilling to give her name, the woman did say that the street is typically a quiet one.
Homicide detectives have been contacted, said Vella.
Vella said a command post has been set up and if anyone has any information, to contact 11 Division Police at 416-808-1100.
