Redwood Shelter fundraiser eyes $300K goal

The Redwood Shelter, a safe haven for women and their children fleeing domestic abuse, hosts its one and only fundraising event Wednesday, Feb. 8 with the aim of surpassing $300,000.

Since its inception six years ago, the 'Gimme Shelter' benefit, a cocktail reception and silent auction, has raised $260,000. This year the event, to be held at the Bram and Bluma Appel Salon at the Toronto Reference Library, is set to break the $300,000 mark with support from more than 200 of Toronto's young professionals who typically attend the event.

"The great thing about it from the Redwood's perspective is that it's driven by volunteers, which keeps the cost low - more money goes to the programs," said Emma Lewzey, the shelter's fundraising manager. "They sell tickets, book the venue and organize the silent auction. They're a fantastic group."

For two decades, the 33-bed shelter has provided programming that includes therapy to help children rebuild their self-esteem and on-going support for women through training and education. Funds raised by the annual event will go directly to supporting Redwood's overall services - towards providing a safe haven for women and children fleeing abuse, but also towards food, clothing, school supplies and diapers. These are items that are used immediately upon the families' arrivals, explained Lewzey. As well, the money goes toward providing the women with legal support and helping them find housing so they can get a stable start.

The event was instigated by a dedicated group of volunteers who wanted to raise money for the shelter through a turn-key event that required minimal time commitment for the shelter staff. The fundraiser is a far cry from the small gathering it once was.

'Gimme Shelter' is a ticket-less event, said Lewzey. All ticket sales are conducted online. Visit www.theredwood.com for tickets or for further details. As part of the event, a former resident, who is part of the Redwood's Women on the Move leadership training program, will speak about her experiences at the shelter, said Lewzey.

Tickets are $95 per person with a Friends of The Redwood Special Package available for $500.
