Fire guts Rexdale auto body shop

The Ontario Fire Marshal is investigating after fire destroyed a Rexdale auto body shop overnight.

Flames erupted at 32 Taber Rd. near Kipling Avenue and Rexdale Boulevard around 1:30 a.m. and quickly escalated to two-alarm status.

Fire crews who responded could see smoke billowing in the sky when they left their fire halls, said Toronto fire District Chief Stephan Powell.

Some 68 firefighters arrived on-scene. Several aerial trucks were set up to flood the top of the building with water, Powell said.

Flames caused the garage roof to collapse.

The blaze gutted the garage. The shop office did not sustain damage.

No injuries were reported.

Reports of explosions being heard on-scene are being investigated by the fire marshal.

Firefighters found a 40-pound propane tank at the site. But it is unknown whether the tank is the cause of explosions heard, Powell said.

Damage is estimated at $500,000.
