Denise Ing is hoping to make the commute something to enjoy, not just endure.

The interactive artist is creating an installation called Rush Hour Service for the Art of the Danforth, a public art walk on Danforth east that takes place from May 20 to June 10.

Ing is looking for help to bring her vision to life.

"The aim is to engage commuters who are going through Coxwell," she said. "What I had in mind is performances and services to make their lives better."

The installation will run each weekday at Coxwell subway station between 6 and 7 p.m.

The details about what exactly will be happening each day are still to be worked out and that's where Ing needs the help of local residents and businesses.

She's looking for people with a service to share, such as yoga or dance.

"It's a way for these people and business to connect with commuters," Ing said, adding she wants it to be an act of kindness rather than business promotion. "There isn't some kind of hidden agenda."

A Cuban dance troupe is slated to take part and commuters can be free to stop and watch for a few minutes or take part and learn a few moves. Ing is also in talks with a fitness instructor who might lead some stretching or just be available to offer advice to people passing through.

Ing isn't sure yet if she'll give advance notice on what will be scheduled from day to day.

"I do think there is a beauty in having the community come up the stairs and have people come upon something unexpected," she said.

Her hope is that the experience adds something to a person's day and engages them during a routine where most people are in their own little worlds.

"I'm sure its something that will linger in their minds," she said, and leave them wondering what's going to show up the next day.

It will be different than TTC buskers who play instruments or sing to showcase their talents and make money. There will be no donation boxes or collection.

"I don't want commuters to feel like there's an ulterior motive," she said.

Local residents or business who would like to participate in Rush Hour Service can contact her through her website, www.deniseing.com

The Art of the Danforth festival features public art, walking tours, art in stores, community workshops, and performances at various venues within walking distance of Danforth Avenue between Greenwood and Woodbine avenues.
