Investigation ongoing into subway construction incident

Police and the labour ministry are investigating after two men were hurt Friday while working in a subway tunnel near York University.

Emergency crews were called to a construction site near Jane Street and Steeles Avenue around 7:40 a.m. The industrial accident happened in a tunnel more than 60 feet underground.

"The construction company had its on-site confined space rescue team working on the incident," Toronto Fire Services Capt. Randy Piercey said. "At 7:55 (a.m.) the on-site emergency crew had a patient on a backboard and asked for Toronto Fire Services' assistance in removing the patient ... At 8:05 (a.m.) one patient was lifted out via crane, and at 8:06 (a.m.) the second patient walked out."

The victims, ages 26 and 42, were taken by ambulance to hospital with minor injuries.

On Oct. 11, a construction worker died and five others were hurt after a large crane toppled over at the site of the future York University subway station.
