The newly restored peace monument at Malvern Collegiate in the Beach is set to be officially unveiled the afternoon of Friday, Nov. 4.

The ceremony for the memorial and cenotaph, which honours the 25 students who died in the First World War, will run from 1 to 3 p.m.

Malvern Avenue from Swanwick to Lyall avenues will be closed for the historic unveiling celebration. More than 1,000 students and community members are expected to attend a special unveiling ceremony at 2 p.m.

Earlier this year, the school community succeeded in raising $50,000 to restore their Great War monument thanks to the support of Veterans Affairs Canada, the Toronto District School Board, PACE Credit Union, the Maintenance and Skilled Trades Council, the Malvern Red and Black Society and scores of families of fallen First World War soldiers, past and present students and staff members, and the Beach community in general.

The restoration involved refinishing the outside skin of the statue and the base, cleaning the granite monument and stabilizing its base as well as crafting a new left arm and sword, restoring eroded stone and repairing lettering. The majority of the work was done on site.

The local high school will also hold its annual Remembrance Day events for junior and senior students the morning of Friday, Nov. 11.

Malvern Collegiate is at 55 Malvern Ave., just south of Swanwick Avenue.
