The Delta Family Resource Centre will celebrate the opening of its new Humber Summit office this month with an open house celebration and information fair.

The non-profit, community-based organization has been around for 30 years and will open its latest site at 2972 Islington Ave. on Thursday, Sept. 22 from 5 to 7 p.m. (with the official opening taking place at 6 p.m.), said Rosalyn Miller, Delta's executive director.

"We started 30 years ago in this community and due to lack of good space, we haven't solidified a location back here until now," she said, noting that until the Humber Summit site, the organization worked primarily out of Wards 8 and 9. "But now we have the opportunity to bring services into this neighbourhood, and we're looking forward to providing settlement services, parenting programs, information, community workshops and food security programs for the residents of Humber Summit."

Delta Family Resource Centre is a United Way member agency, and as such, its commitment is to help communities and neighbourhoods develop, build capacity, and respond to the needs within specific areas, Miller added.

Not only will the open house event serve to introduce the community to Delta and its services, it will also introduce Delta to the community and its needs.

"We recognize that there is a diverse population up here and we want to make sure what we do and the programs we bring in reflect the needs of the community - and that's part of the open house," she said. "We're looking forward to getting to know people and learning what is currently missing - what are the needs? What are the issues?"
