Tamil community walkathon for Amnesty International slated

Tamil community fundraisers are staging a walkathon this Sunday, Sept. 18, in support of Amnesty International around Scarborough's Thomson Memorial Park.

The global human-rights advocate turns 50 this year.

"Many within the Tamil Canadian community have been touched by Amnesty's continued efforts calling for an investigation into human rights violations in Sri Lanka and want to give back," Canadian Tamil Congress spokesperson Sarujan Kanapathipillai said in a release.

Organizers said the event starts with registration at around 8:30 a.m., begins at 9 at the park on Brimley Road, and will end with a cake-cutting ceremony to honour Amnesty's anniversary.
