Toronto and East York Community Council will be backing a six-storey residential development on the edge of the Glen Davis Ravine on Kingston Road.
The building, at 580-592 Kingston Rd., has been in the works since 2007 and is currently before the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB). City planning staff are recommending the city support the changes to the zoning amendments required by the proposal. But a group of residents is worried about the impact on the ravine slope backing on the development."The debate is whether or not you have a ravine, whether you destroy a ravine," said Neil Sinclair, a member of the Friends of The Glen Davis Ravine. "You build a three-storey parking garage into the ground, you will literally have trucked away that ravine and put it in a dumpsite."But developer Allan Windren said the building is consistent with neighbouring buildings and will be well-integrated into the ravine."Our development naturalizes a portion of the ravine with native trees and shrubs," he said. City staff are recommending approval pending comments and approval from various civic officials. A total of 43 conditions need to be met before city staff can draft a bylaw allowing the development to be built. The community council approved the recommendations at it's Wednesday, Feb. 16 meeting.
