North York: TTC decision on bus service cuts postponed to Feb. 2

Transit riders in North York will lose some off-peak and late night bus service if the Toronto Transit Commision's (TTC) proposed 2011 budget is approved by the commission and city council.

TTC staff are recommending cutting some service on 48 bus routes throughout the city, which have a combined ridership of 1.3 million. Those cuts include eliminating late-night, weekend and/or off-peak service on 15 routes in North York (see sidebar), effective this spring.

Ridership on the 48 bus routes is low during off-peak times, TTC staff explained for its recommendation. By reducing service, TTC staff said it could both save $6 million this year and reallocate resources to improve transit service during rush hours and midday periods on routes where demand is growing.

Despite increasing fares in 2010, the TTC had a ridership of 477 million last year, 15 million higher than it projected. It has forecast an all-time record high of 483 million rides this year.

The TTC already increased the frequency of service on almost 30 bus and streetcar routes at the beginning of the year, including on 14 routes in North York (see bottom of story). It said it plans to increase service on more routes in September.

TTC staff released its recommended budget outlining the cuts Monday Jan. 10. However, councillors on the commission voted Wednesday to postpone making a decision on the proposed route cuts until the TTC's Feb. 2 meeting. City council is scheduled to approve its 2011 budget Feb. 7.
