Maclean magazine founder's house is now a historic property

The house Maclean's magazine founder John Maclean lived in will continue to stand in the shadow of Casa Loma now that Toronto council has designated it an historic property.

The house at 7 Austin Terrace has been up for redevelopment, and in late 2009 the owner began demolishing features on the site.

Heritage Preservation Services had taken an interest in the property, which led to Toronto council voting to support a heritage designation for the house the week of Jan. 25.

St. Paul's Councillor Joe Mihevc said the decision closes a legal loophole and should protect the house from future damage.

"Now that it's designated heritage, I hope the applicant comes forward to work with the city and puts in place a development that honours the heritage nature of the site," he said.

The applicant has 30 days to object to the designation, but during that time, no further alterations can take place.
