Ward 7 Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti will have to undergo a compliance audit of his campaign expenses from 2010, an independent committee has decided.
Toronto's compliance audit committee voted unanimously on Friday, Jan. 27 to uphold a request for a compliance audit by retired school teacher David DePoe.
He alleges that Mammoliti's expenses for the election added up to thousands of dollars more than he reported, and that he failed to report the rent that would have to be paid on his Islington Avenue campaign office.
Mammoliti said he'll co-operate with the audit and won't appeal the decision in court.
"I'll be working with the auditor, answering any questions they have," he said. "It's very simple. We don't think that we've done anything that warrants anything else except an audit."
Mammoliti said that his audited statements may be confusing because he blended his abandoned mayoralty campaign in with his city council campaign. But he said that everything was done legally and appropriately.
If an auditor finds otherwise, Mammoliti could face sanctions ranging from fines to removal from office.
