Premier responsible for Ontario being merely average

May 8, 2008 02:57 PM While Premier Dalton McGuinty and his gang tell us not to worry, given his credibility all of us need to worry and hang on to our wallets.

Ontario's economic strength, as measured by the gross domestic product per capita, has now slipped to fourth in Canada. We now are behind not only Alberta (understandable) but Saskatchewan and Newfoundland.

Stop the Newfie jokes now, something is rotten... more

Streetcars no longer the sensible choice for the TTC

May 8, 2008 02:57 PM The sight of streetcars huddled together could and should be a thing of the past.

In fact, the sight of streetcars should be a thing of the past except when they run on dedicated track. Streetcars just don't work here anymore.

Traffic congestion is only exacerbated by streetcar operation on streets such as King, Queen, Roncesvalles, Bathurst, Dundas and so on. The far-too-frequent track... more

Don't take away TTC's right to strike

May 8, 2008 02:57 PM Toronto Council would be wise to reject emotional calls to make the TTC an essential service, thereby eliminating the right of its workers to strike.

I do not believe that a modern, progressive society should be removing fundamental rights of its citizens. If such an action were to be taken with the TTC, we risk opening the door to removing rights from a range of important, but not necessarily... more

TTC union member responds to strike

May 5, 2008 02:59 PM This will be for myself a defining moment that will haunt me long after most Torontonians will have hopefully forgiven our membership for the decision to withdraw our services in the dead of night.

As a proud unionist of Local 113 for the TTC, I am left defenceless to rationalize what led to the abandonment of our patrons at midnight, however, we as a brotherhood took a stand against a... more

Look to junk food manufacturers to save school pools

May 5, 2008 02:59 PM Regarding the pool closures at the Toronto District School Board.

Why not get the pop, chips and chocolate bar manufacturers back into the schools?

They were with us for the past 30 years, waving their sugary magic on our calorie intake. If school is really about a culture of second chances, why not give them the opportunity to make amends and save the pools through advertising? Although the... more

Hard to respect 'greedy workers'

May 2, 2008 02:30 PM Regarding the TTC strike.

Mayor David Miller seems shocked that the union would not respect the 48-hour notice before striking 'deal'. Isn't it time the mayor woke up and realized he can't count on union fealty - even when he gives away the store in salary and benefits?

Now the mayor can do the job he should be performing - working for the residents in Toronto. He and his executive committee... more

Bin size is misleading

April 28, 2008 10:47 AM Recently, my wife and a friend went over to the Scarborough Civic Centre to take a look at the garbage bins on display.

Since there is only the two of us left in the house, we were thinking of signing up for the small bin. We are also very much into recycling.

Looking over the dimensions of the bin, it looked fine but behold, upon opening the small bin, only two thirds of the bin is usable.... more

Everyone deserves respect

April 28, 2008 10:47 AM Re: 'Experiencing 'Islamophobia' on a first hand basis,' Guest Column, April 11.

I commend Zahra Farahmand for her fine column. She writes well and highlights an important Canadian value - respect toward all.

I encourage The Mirror to solicit and publish more articles from faith groups that experience persecution, including Protestant Evangelical Christians, perhaps the most politically... more

Needed: Politicians with courage

April 28, 2008 10:47 AM Re: 'Time for school board to make necessary decisions,' Editorial, April 18.

Your editorial said something that is revealing and unfortunate: "But given that there are provincial politicians who now owe their careers to not making those very decisions...."

Shouldn't the situation be the reverse: politicians who owe their careers to making tough decisions with integrity and intelligence? I... more

Lack of time at school reason for student failure

April 28, 2008 10:47 AM As the ongoing debate over our taxpayer-funded, unionized government monopoly education system once again heats up, it seems that something always gets lost in the mix: student results and how to improve them.

While the government pats itself on the back for shovelling more money into the education pit (almost $18 billion and counting), the teachers' union (and all who are paid under that huge... more
