Gas doused man walks into Woodbine Slots

Roads reopen after police shut down area

Woodbine Slots was evacuated early Wednesday morning after a gasoline-soaked man suspected of carrying explosives threatened to kill casino patrons.

Const. Tony Vella told the Guardian that the 32-year-old man, whose name has not been released, allegedly walked into the casino shortly before midnight, smelling of gas and threatening to harm himself and others.

“The man was apprehended by casino security, but before that it looks like he threw some kind of suspicious object,” Vella said.

Fearing the object might have been an explosive, police evacuated the casino and closed surrounding roads, including Rexdale Boulevard from Hwy. 27 to HumberwoodDrive until shortly before 8 a.m., as a precaution.

The Emergency Task Force was called in to investigate and the device was located shortly thereafter, Vella said.

“It was found to have no explosive materials,” he said.

The suspect, whose name has not yet been released, was arrested and taken into custody. He faces charges of threatening death and mischief interfering with property.
