Two police officers were hurt Thursday while trying to stop a car for a traffic violation in north Scarborough.
Police said a motorist didn't pull over for the officers but got caught up in a traffic jam on Finch Avenue near Markham Road around 9:05 a.m.
"The officers were able to approach the vehicle. But then as traffic cleared up, the vehicle continued on its way," Toronto police spokesperson Const. Wendy Drummond said.
"One officer was struck, rolled across the hood and landed on his feet."
The other officer, who was holding onto a door handle when the car pulled away, jammed his fingers.
A police chase reaching speeds of more than 100 km/h ensued but was later called off due to public safety.
Police managed to obtain a partial licence plate and arrested the motorist at his home on Horseshoe Crescent.
The officers involved in the traffic stop, both of 42 Division, suffered minor injuries.
"They went to the hospital to get checked out because they were soar and bruised," 42 Division Det. Sgt. Dave Vickers said.
"This was just a crazy, violent way of trying to get away from the police for a very minor traffic offence."
A 42-year-old man has been charged with failing to stop for police, assault with a weapon, assault with intent to resist arrest, failing to stop after an accident and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.
