North Yorker stages play at Diesel Playhouse

North Yorker Andrew Pifko plays the role of Simon in Kate Hewlett's The Swearing Jar.

After a successful run at the Toronto Fringe Festival earlier this month, North York native Andrew Pifko is set to take his play The Swearing Jar to The Diesel Playhouse from July 18 to 20.

The Earl Haig Secondary School graduate, who currently lives in New York City, plays the role of Simon in the Kate Hewlett-written production that deals with marriage and surprises.

"I fell in love with Kate's writing," Pifko said of the playwright who also wrote Humans Anonymous. "When she sent me the script I said I would absolutely do it. We got amazing reviews for The Swearing Jar."

The Swearing Jar, which was selected as Best of the Fringe, was directed by Geoffrey Pounsett, who was nominated for a Dora Award for A Quiet Place.

"I was attracted to the writing," Pifko said. "People ask if we improv on stage and there is no improv. Kate includes the anti-rhythms of speech in the play, the ums, uhs. That's the way the characters speak."

Pifko, who holds an honours bachelor of science degree in human biology and zoology from The University of Toronto, has appeared in numerous film and television productions including Queer as Folk, Blue Murder and The Gospel of John.

Along with appearing on stage, Pifko has also worked behind it in the director's chair for An Evening of Pinter/Pintauro at Studio 16 in Vancouver and was co-artistic director of the Anandale Shakespeare Troupe in New York.
