A Scarborough Tamil arts group will host a theatre festival at York Woods Library Theatre at Jane Street and Finch Avenue May 24 and 25.
Stage plays and dance performances will be part of Karumaiyam Arts Group Canada's fourth annual two-day theatre festival.
Karumaiyam Arts Group Canada was found by Tamil social activists and theatre artists three years ago to address social issues faced by the Tamil community through performing theatre works.
The goal of Karumaiyam is to oppose all forms oppression and work to uplift all oppressed groups of people, irrespective of gender, cast and race, said the Sabesan Sinnathamby, co-ordinator of Karumaiyam Arts Group Canada.
"We want to give hope to the future (Tamil) generations," he said. "We want to learn from different communities and different culture groups."
Performances include Vanavillin Vilimpil by Ntozake Shange, directed by Karumaiyam Women Workshop Group, Nathaiyum Aamaiyum by Eugene Ionesco, directed by Sinnathamby and Kattrin Theeratha Pakkangal, a poem selection by Chelian.
The May 24 performance will be held at 6 p.m., followed by a 4:30 p.m. start the next day at 1785 Finch Ave.
