Councillor's comments spark outrage at community council
Ward 23 (Willowdale) Councillor John Filion moved to refuse the official plan amendment for the proposal, which calls for four single-detached housing units on Senlac Road. The proposal has been appealed to the Ontario Municipal Board.
As councillors were raising hands to vote against Filion's motion, he suggested those councillors favoured lobbyists.
"He is imputing motive and it's inflammatory and wrong," said Ward 16 (Eglinton-Lawrence) Councillor Karen Stintz, one of several councillors who voted against Filion. "I am asking for a withdrawal (of the comment)."
When Filion refused, Ward 34 (Don Valley East) Councillor Denzil Minnan-Wong told Ward 9 (York Centre) Councillor Maria Augimeri, chair of the community council, to kick Filion out of chambers. Augimeri remained silent.
"I want an apology," said Stinz, who also urged Augimeri to remove Filion from the council chambers.
Filion withdrew his comment but did not apologize.
Filion's motion was passed by a 5-4 vote.
