Monarch Park student cuts her hair to help cancer patients

Fundraiser slated for May 23

While hair plays a fashion role for many teens, for 18-year-old Felicia Ha it is an opportunity to help those battling cancer.

On Friday, May 23, Ha will shave off her hair that has grown to more than 12 inches long. She will then send it to organization that manufactures wigs for children who suffer from hair loss.

"Hair is something that grows," she said. "I am trying to get emotionally detached from my hair."

A Grade 12 student, Ha urged other students and staff at Monarch Park Collegiate to do the same.

Leading by example, Ha is organizing the Monarch Park Cuts for Cancer 2008 event.

The event will not only collect hair but also raise money for a three-year-old leukemia patient in Vietnam.

"He needs an operation that costs $300,000." Ha said. The patient is a nephew of a Grade 11 student at the school.

According to Ha, her schoolmate was recently told that her nephew is sick and will require a costly operation. "Because she is in our school, we believe we are all family." Ha said.

To raise money for the operation, there will be raffles and a food sale in the front foyer of the school at 1 Hanson St.

Friday's event will be the first at the school, and Ha is making plans to have a similar event every year.
