East York woman, two daughters drowned in pool

An East York woman and her two daughters have died after they were found unconscious in a hotel swimming pool in the eastern Ontario town of Gananoque.

Police, fire and EMS were called to the Best Western on King Street in Gananoque at about 8:50 a.m. Saturday for a drowning. Police officers, a hotel employee and a hotel guest pulled the victims out of the water.

"Officers began CPR which was taken over by the paramedics and fire department upon their arrival," Gananoque Police Chief Kai Liu said.

"Initially there were no vital signs on all three victims. They were able to recover a pulse from the three victims prior to being transported to Kingston General Hospital."

Naila Yasmin, 43, died in hospital at 12:50 p.m. Sunday. Her 14-year-old daughter Kinza Kaianad died at 5:45 p.m. the next day. Yasmin's other daughter, 11-year-old Sunaila Kaianad, died at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Liu said the victims were non-swimmers.

"The last witness to see them said that the two (girls) were in the shallow end, mom was supervising from the deck."

Five to 10 minutes later the three were found unconscious in the indoor pool.

"There's no evidence of foul play," said Liu, adding the tragedy "has touched everyone in this town."

Gananoque, located east of Kingston, is a gateway to the Thousand Islands. The town's population of 5,200 quadruples with tourists in the summer.
