It looks like the Dovercourt Boys' and Girls' Club is standing on firmer ground.
Its 21 Randolph Ave. location, in jeopardy of closing because its lease was up at the end of the month, has been given a one-month extension.
According to Executive Director Tony Puopolo, a prospective new owner would allow the club and the Davenport Perth Community Centre, which shares the space, five more years.
"We've got a glimmer of hope," he told The Villager.
Puopolo is keeping his fingers crossed that the sale will go through.
"We are in discussion with a non-profit group looking to buy the building," confirmed Ward 18 Councillor (Davenport) Adam Giambrone. "We're looking at giving them a loan guarantee and expect to go to council with a motion this week."
The details are still being worked out, but this would ensure that the non-profit group would get a mortgage and as part of this, it would have to continue to provide the space for the Dovercourt Boys' and Girls' Club.
The news was officially announced at a vigil Tuesday evening, originally expected to be a somber event.
"It was amazing," said Puopolo. "More than 150 people showed up."
The club received a little star power too. Former Toronto Argonauts Football coach and the team's current Chief Executive Officer Pinball Clemons stopped by the event.
"He came by the vigil to meet with the kids," Puopolo said. "He was a little late because he came right from the airport, from a trip to Calgary."
Puopolo said March Break activities, from March 10 to 14, at the club will go ahead as scheduled.
As well, Puopolo is in talks with Clemons and Toronto Police Services to play a ball hockey tournament with the kids in the near future - as a way of celebrating the good news, he said.
