Snow Wonder

The provincial government will hold public consultation and information sessions on proposed changes to the building code, which would require fire sprinkler systems in newly constructed multiple-unit residential buildings higher than three storeys. | Comments can be submitted on the building code website of the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing at www.ontario.ca/buildingcode until May 1. Public information sessions will be held in late March and early April. | Since December, several fires have claimed the lives of North York residents, including a woman and her two children who died in their Toronto Community Housing townhouse and a woman in a Jane Street and Finch Avenue highrise earlier this month. | "These consultations are a chance to build consensus and increase awareness about fire safety across the province," Ontario Fire Marshal Patrick Burke said in a press release. "Everyone must understand that fire safety begins with prevention and that smoke alarms and sprinklers can save lives and limit property loss."
