North York resident Sue Chun has received Family Service Toronto's (FST) Youth Volunteer Award for her work with website jane-finch.com.
Chun, a documentary filmmaker and community activist, received the award at FST's annual general meeting Wednesday, June 20.
Chun, who was nominated for the award by jane-finch.com webmaster Paul Nguyen, is a recipient of the 2011 Volunteer Youth Service Award from the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration, and a 2011 Heritage Toronto Award. Her commitment to diversity won her the John Webb Graham Multiculturalism Scholarship and the Ethnic Broadcasting Award in honour of Johnny Lombardi.
Chun, who lives at Jane Street and Finch Avenue, said she appreciates the work of young people is being recognized.
"I think of the other youth in the neighbourhood and the work they do and it is important," said Chun, who received a 2011 Canadian Ethnic Media Association award for excellence in journalism.
The FST Youth Volunteer Award recognizes young people who are deeply engaged as volunteers. Nominees embody FST's values, such as increasing access and participation in the community and building strong communities.
Nguyen said he nominated Chun because of FST's long history in Toronto and the recognition they give volunteers.
"If youth in Jane and Finch can volunteer, there's no excuse for anyone else," he said.
For more than 90 years, FST has been assisting families and individuals living in the city through counselling, community development, advocacy and public education programs.
