Geocache mistaken for pipe bomb in south Etobicoke

Etobicoke Guardian

Police had the area near Bloor Street West and Prince Edward Drive in Etobicoke blocked off for hours today, after a geocache strapped to a pole in the area was mistaken for a pipe bomb.

Sgt. John Walker of 22 Division said police were called down to the park on a suspicious package call at around 10:30 a.m. The Emergency Task Force was ultimately called in, and opened the device at around 2 p.m.

"It's a geocache. It looks like a pipe bomb, but it's not - it's a silly GPS game," Walker said. "There was never anything unsafe about it, but you don't know that until you open it up."

'Geocaching' is an outdoor treasure hunting game, whereby players try to locate hidden containers - called geocaches - using GPS-enabled devices.
