York Mills Road east of Yonge Street remained closed Sunday morning after an overnight collision took the life of a Beck Taxi driver.
Beck owner Gail Souter called it a very sad day. “We are devastated to hear the news about this morning’s accident. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families,” the company said in a statement.
We will do whatever we can to support Toronto Police in their investigation.”
Police said an eastbound Mercedes on York Mills hit a Hydro pole, veered into opposing lanes and then hit the taxi at about 2:55 a.m.
The taxi driver, whose named hasn’t been released, was extricated and rushed to hospital, but did not survive.
No passengers were in the taxi.
The road was closed Sunday morning between Old Yonge Street and Upper Highland Crescent as police reconstructed the scene.
The Mercedes driver was also injured in the crash, but not seriously. Initially, Toronto Police reported one driver in the crash was under arrest, but on Sunday confirmed no charges have been laid.
The investigation, however, continues.
