Animated film at Mindfest aims to promote understanding of mental illness

City Centre Mirror

The Rendezvous with Madness (RWM) Film Festival and the University of Toronto’s psychiatry department are marking the third annual Mindfest salute to Mental Health Awareness Week with a special film screening.

The two organizations have come together to present ‘Rocks In My Pockets,’ an animated film highlighting stories of women combating mental illness. Latvian-born artist and filmmaker Signe Baumane created the film using experiences from her own family as inspiration.

The screening will also feature a discussion between Baumane and RWM program director Geoff Pevere and others.

It will serve as an introduction to Mindfest, an annual day-long event that aims to promote awareness and understanding of mental illness.

The screening of ‘Rocks In My Pockets’ will take place at the TIFF Bell Lightbox at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5.

Mindfest itself will take place at U of T’s Hart House on Wednesday, Oct. 7. For more information, visit www.mindfest.ca
