Council won't block Costco gas bar

Costco will get to build its first members-only gas bar in Toronto after Toronto Council abandoned a possible Ontario Municipal Board appeal last week.
Scarborough Centre Councillor Michael Thompson had argued the gas bar was inappropriate at the wholesaler's Warden Avenue store south of Hwy. 401.
A committee of adjustment decision in June granted minor variances allowing 12 pumps on three islands by the store, which could be reached through Canadian Road.
Scarborough Community Council then asked the city to appeal, but planning staff and the city's legal department have concluded "this was not something we would be able to win," Thompson said Thursday, Oct. 1.
He added he still feels the gas bar is inappropriate and shares concerns about its possible effect on traffic and parking with many of the store's neighbours.
"I don't feel for a moment we were wrong."
