Pair of Scarborough high schools close early today due to water, power issues
Emergencies forced Toronto’s separate school board to close two Scarborough high schools Tuesday, Feb. 5, morning.
A car hit a fire hydrant at L’Amoreaux Community Centre in Agincourt, forcing the adjacent Mary Ward Catholic Secondary School on Kennedy Road to shut down its water supply and dismiss students until repairs can be made, said Emmy Szekeres Milne, a board spokesperson.
The school decided to shut down at 11:45 a.m., but the board said emergency crews were on the scene and it is expected repairs can be completed on Tuesday and that classes would resume the next morning.
Blessed Cardinal Newman Catholic Secondary on Brimley Road South was closed earlier Tuesday morning because it had no heat or power after a transformer fire in the area, Szekeres Milne said.
The board was not certain whether classes at Cardinal Newman could restart on Wednesday, but asked parents and students from Mary Ward and Cardinal Newman to visit its website at www.tcdsb.org or its Twitter feed @TCDSB for updates.
