Warming centre opened as 200 homes without power
London Community News
The city has opened a warming centre in White Oaks as almost 200 homes in South London are without power at this hour.
Residents will be welcome to visit the South London Community Centre at 1119 Jalna Blvd. until the power is restored. A city spokesperson said families were encouraged to stop by, warm up and grab a snack.
According to London Hydro representative Nancy Hutton work will be underway to restore the power until about 11 p.m.
Hutton said crews were having trouble re-routing power to the neighbourhood.
The outage to 197 London Hydro residential customers on Sasha and Muriel crescents, located between Southdale and Bradley Avenues, was caused by a “cable fault.”
“This is definitely an inconvenience to people and our crews are working as hard as they can,” she said. “A cable fault can happen at any time, and even in newer equipment. It’s unfortunate that it happened during extreme cold weather.”
She said with a cable fault it takes time to locate where the problem is.
“It’s a part of the nature of the business,” she said. “We’ve spent a significant amount over the past 10 years improving our infrastructure, so outages don’t happen very often in London.”
