Public schools closed Friday, school board announces
McGuinty attempts to stop one-day labour disruption
The Toronto District School Board has sent home a letter to parents advising them that public elementary and junior high schools will be closed on Friday due to a planned one-day labour disruption by teachers across the province.
At the same time, Premier Dalton McGuinty said yesterday the province will go to the Ontario Labour Relations Board Thursday to prevent what it is calling an illegal strike and teachers’ unions are calling a one-day protest.
The school board’s letter says elementary and junior high schools will be closed Friday for students’ safety.
“All elementary and junior high schools will be closed to students due to the unpredictability of maintaining adequate supervision at schools and ensuring a safe learning environment,” it said.
“We understand that this is challenging for many parents/guardians. However, we ask that alternative arrangements for children be made prior to this one-day political protest.”
One its website, the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario said it is staging the one-day job action to protest Bill 115, which includes a wage freeze.
Meanwhile, Ontario’s public high school students have announced they will hold a one-day labour disruption Wed. Jan. 16.
