Some of the best junior skaters in Canada will compete in Etobicoke for the chance to join Team Canada next month.
The Toronto Speed Skating Club is set to host the Canadian Junior Short Track Championships from Saturday, Dec. 8 to Sunday, Dec. 9 at the MasterCard Centre for Hockey Excellence, 400 Kipling Ave.
During the two-day event, Canada’s top 32 junior women and top 32 junior men – including Toronto’s own William Preudhomme and Stephanie Bowskill – will compete for places on the Canadian team at the World Junior Short Track Championships in Warsaw, Poland in February 2013.
These athletes, aged 15 to 19, represent Canada’s Olympic future in speed skating, a sport that accounts for 23 per cent of Canada’s Olympic medals since 1924 – more than any other sport.
The competition runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8 and 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 9.
The entry fee for spectators is $5 a day.
