Sun Caf© Soleil is a hard name to say, I am not sure if one uses the French, English or both versions which feels a little goofy and redundant. But, this lovely new-ish treasure at 1985 Queen St. E. (416-686-3310) in anything but goofy and redundant.
Traditionally the south side of Queen street fares less well than the north in the patio department due to the lack of direct sunshine. It is worth taking a little sweater to enjoy their home baked muffins and breads on this large, well designed, spread out deck.
The interior is equally cozy with soft, warm colours, comfy couches and fresh plants to nestle in to. Soft, classical music sounds like a fall afternoon with a caf© au lait and a good pal or a good book.
The food is as fresh and homemade as can be.
I enjoyed a cheddar cheese omelet that was loaded with cheese and served with a bit of mixed greens and a spoonful of salsa.
But the bread, oh man, the bread. Four healthy, thick slices of a chewy but crisp and aromatic rosemary loaf. Toasted just right and slathered in butter. I was aware that I was downing my entire carb intake for the day but was quite unable to stop myself.
My husband had a lighter meal of very fresh melons, fruits and berries mixed with yogurt. He too, was derailed by the very same bread.
We were informed upon ordering at the counter that our order had gone in just after a large table. Offered a sample of their homemade muffins, we ordered decaf coffee and set to waiting. The muffin scraps were delicious, if a little sweet for my taste, and the coffee was hot, bitter and strong. A good sign with decaf, it bodes well for the real thing when the decaf is hearty. They do offer all sorts of cinos and au laits as well as herbals too.
Our wait was a peaceful 20 minutes, an unheard of amount of time in a faster paced diner style resto but we were happy to watch all the other patrons and chit chat. (The forewarning went a long way toward our acceptance of this wait, a sure sign of a well-run establishment.)
Opening at 7 a.m. on weekdays will ensure that this independently owned spot is the place to stop after your morning walk or meet with a client at mid day. Ole Soleil!
