Public warning issued after Wendy's employee gets hepatitis A

Anyone who ate at a Scarborough Wendy's restaurant near Sheppard Avenue and Markham Road is being warned to watch for signs of illness after an employee was diagnosed with hepatitis A.

Although the risk of infection is very low, Toronto Public Health is advising people who ate at the restaurant at 438 Nugget Ave. northwest of Sheppard and Markham between July 26 and Aug. 6 to contact their health care provider if they develop fever, loss of appetite, tiredness, nausea or vomiting, dark urine or yellowing of the skin.

Symptoms can develop up to 50 days after exposure to the virus.

Hepatitis A is a disease of the liver caused by a virus and can be spread through contaminated food, public health said.

Because it is found in the stool of infected people, hand hygiene is extremely important in preventing the spread of the virus.

It is not spread through coughing or sneezing.

Most people who are infected with hepatitis A recover completely with no permanent liver damage, public health said.

A vaccine is available for people at high risk of getting hepatitis A.
