Weekly drop-in group for young people and substance abuse

North York General Hospital is helping young people find their way in life without depending on substances.

A weekly drop-in group called Finding Your Way is offered for those aged 16 to 24 on Thursdays from 2:30 to 4 p.m.

The support group aims to:

- identify the consequences of substance abuse;

- provide a place to talk openly about feelings and challenges with other who share similar experiences;

- teach skills for recognizing what is getting in the way of coping with day-to-day stresses and struggles;

- identify personal strengths;

- help develop an action plan to address your goals.

Finding Your Way meets at the hospital's Branson site, 555 Finch Ave. W. Snacks and bus tokens are provided.

Call Michelle Lavergne at 416-635-2581 or Erika Rukin at 416-635-2582 for details.

NYGH also offers a youth substance use program at the Branson site for young people living in North York and York.

This is an assessment, counselling and referral service aimed at helping those aged 16 to 24 who are experiencing difficulties related to substance use or who are experiencing both substance use and mental health concerns.

Group therapy, a parent support and education group, harm reduction, and consultation with an addiction physician are available.

Day and evening appointments are available and services are covered by OHIP.

Referrals are accepted from individuals, families, physicians and community service providers. To make a referral, call 416-756-6642.
