Wanda O’Brien spent her first 18 years in Toronto, before moving to Ottawa for the Journalism Program at Carleton University. Upon arrival, she learned of the Rwanda Initiative and instantly wanted to participate in the program. Four years later, and degree complete, Wanda spent July and August in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, working as an intern for the Rwanda News Agency (www.rnanews.com), an online news wire. Six weeks working in a newsroom in Rwanda and travelling the countryside in the weekends has been fascinating, exciting and challenging. Wanda is continuing to blog about her life in Rwanda to share those experiences, although she returned to Toronto in September. The Rwanda Initiative aims to address the shortage of journalism educators in Rwanda, improve journalism standards, build media capacity and further the relationship between the School of Journalism and Communication at Carleton University in Ottawa and the National University of Rwanda in Butare.
