March Break Fun in the 6ix!

The evenings are getting brighter, the air outside has a hint of spring to come –it’s almost time to say good bye to your heavy winter coat and embrace your lighter spring coat. With spring in the air, it’s time for parents to get ready for March Break. The City of Toronto has an abundance of family-oriented activities for free or at a very minimal cost. So instead of thinking how you’re going to survive a week with the kids at home, here are some frugal activities for you to consider:

Sweet sticky fun!

Who can resist the irresistible taste of maple syrup? Not many people can! If you love having some maple syrup on your pancakes, then head on down to the Purple Woods Maple Syrup Festival. You can enjoy some fresh hot pancakes; learn how maple syrup is made; go for a wagon ride or take in a variety of other fun activities. The best part about this festival, admission is $5 per person (plus HST) which is a lot cheaper than the other maple syrup festivals in and around the GTA.

Family movie time

If you love watching movies in the theatre with your kids, your love of movies can easily run you more than $50 by the time you factor the cost of your movie tickets and some grub. Well for the month of March, Cineplex is giving families a break at the box office. Every Saturday morning starting at 11 a.m. you can enjoy some family-friendly movies all for the cost of $2.99 per person. For a complete list of the movies being played, go here.

Feeling lucky?

Show your Irish pride at the St Patrick’s Day Parade! The parade now in its 30th year is the largest display of Irish cultural heritage and history in the City of Toronto. So bring your family down to enjoy a beautifully orchestrated parade on Sunday March 19. It’s free. To ensure you and your family have the best spot to view the parade, plan where you are going to stand along the parade route beforehand.

Who’s your favourite star?

Why not kick off March Break with a bang by heading to the Sony Centre for Performing Arts for Family Fan Day! There will be a full house of stars from the media as well as your favourite television shows. The first 100 people that attend the event will receive guaranteed access to “the stars” and they will receive a door prize too. So head on down on the first day of March Break and you will get to enjoy games, interactive attractions and meet the stars.

Love nature?

Take along walk at the Rouge National Urban Park. You can take in the breathtaking scenery, take in some wildlife sightings or have a fitness challenge. The options are endless and park staff members are able to accommodate anyone – just tell them what you need.
