We are heading to an election that could finally propel the Conservatives to a majority government. While I am not unhappy with the way things have played out over the past few years, I still find it amusing that Stephen Harper has had to audition for the top job for five years before the average Canadian voter can bring themselves to believe he is really not scary.
One of the criticisms of elections is the cost: the figure of $300 million is always thrown around although with inflation it seems hard to believe the cost hasn't doubled or tripled over the past few years. Frankly, that's $10 a head for the privilege of passing judgement (or bestowing laurels) on our federal government. I'd even pay for my entire family and think it a good bargain.
There's no reason why a democracy shouldn't cost us something, and look at the real estate that has to be covered in Canada's case! Maybe I'm easily pleased, but $10 is a cheap thrill, especially if my choice wins. It's almost as much fun as the hockey pool!
