Feeding program - one of the ways we tried to help while we were in South Africa.
Clark Kim
The fifth in a series of journal entries while written in South Africa.
I knew we would be kept busy but just how busy was something I didn't expect -- not that I'm complaining.
In fact, it was rewarding just to know we could help out the people here running the orphanage in many different ways.
Among our group, we had a few teachers, pastor, journalist, nursing student, interior designer, and others who brought their own unique talents.
Collectively, we all pitched in to help ease the load off the workers and volunteers that do so much day in and day out.
Whether it was sorting donations, taking care of babies, entertaining children, participating in the feeding program, or making home visits to see how the locals were doing, we found joy in being able to help in any way we could.
And it wasn't difficult at all to do any of these things because we found the people in South Africa to be gracious, welcoming, and hospitable.
Considering many live in what we may consider sub-par conditions, it's really amazing to see how they genuinely seem to be more satisfied with their lives than we tend to be with our own.
I've come to love South Africa because of the people -- especially the youth.
If they are of any indication, the future looks bright for this nation.
