It has been 40 years since the inception of Earth Day. It's kind of sad to think we can put a man on the moon and find cures for diseases, but we can't seem to figure out a way to keep the earth healthy. Maybe that should be won't, rather than can't. Forty years later and animals are still endangered, rivers are still polluted, air is still dirty and forests are still being lost. It's easy to get discouraged.
But then I get reminded about all the good. The students who organize litterless lunches at their school, the group of neighbours who pledge to stop consuming new for a few months, the homeowner who installs geothermal or solar panels, the compost enthusiast, the local food enthusiasts, the cyclists, the company that voluntarily builds a green roof, the volunteers cleaning up their local park, the organization working to raise awareness about climate change, the restaurant that focuses on local ingredients, the apartment dwellers who guerilla compost, the coffee drinker who always uses a re-useable mug. The list goes on and on.Every day people around the city, the country and the world are making choices - big and small - to do what they can to help the earth.
It's inspiring.
But, it's not enough. It's time to kick it up a notch.
For the Earth.
