The federal government has abruptly announced the end of the ecoENERGY audit program. Those who didn't have an audit booked by midnight last night will no longer qualify for the thousands of dollars in grants for making energy efficient changes to their homes - things like installing new windows, an energy efficient furnace or boosting insulation. It's a shame. Canadians were taking the initiative to make their homes a greener place - greenhouse gas emissions from our homes are a major contributor to Canada's emissions that contribute to climate change - and now they don't have any incentive from the government to do it.
Given the lack of leadership and action taken by the Conservative government when it comes to climate change and cutting GHG emissions, the ecoENERGY rebate program was really the least it could do and be helping to make a difference.
Those who had booked an audit prior to March 31, have until March 2011 to complete the retrofits.
